The incident happened in Putnam County near the Connecticut state line on Thursday, Jan. 11 just before 7 a.m., when a car crashed into a tractor-trailer on Route 6 in Brewster in the area of Dingle Ridge Road, according to the Brewster Fire Department.

Arriving first responders soon found that a passenger car had become wedged underneath the truck and was fully engulfed in flames. Further investigation also revealed that the tractor-trailer had been carrying food products and that its driver was not injured.

As firefighters from neighboring Danbury began putting out the flames, the driver of the passenger car was declared dead at the scene. Crews also closed Route 6 in both directions as they continued to put out the fire.

Because of the collision, the tractor-trailer's fuel tanks had ruptured, prompting a response from the Putnam County Department of Emergency Services Hazardous Material Team as well.

The identity of the driver killed in the crash and the cause of the incident has not yet been released.

New York State Police are now investigating the crash and both directions of Route 6 between Dingle Ridge Road and the Connecticut state line are still closed as of 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call (845) 677-7300 to speak with police.
